Fiber News & Updates
Vandalism to Lake Region's fiber infrastructure left nearly 240 customers without service on October 19. Lake Region is asking the public for help identifying suspicious activity in the area.
Lake Region Technology & Communications (LRTC) is asking for the public's assistance following an act of vandalism that damaged fiber infrastructure and disrupted internet service to nearly 240 customers in the Tenkiller Harbor area on Monday, October 19, 2026. The incident occurred at approximately 2 p.m. near the intersection of S. Indian Road and S. 486 Road. The damage was discovered on a utility pole located off S. Indian Road, within the utility right-of-way. Based on observations made by LRTC crews, it appears the individual responsible used climbing hooks, similar to those used by utility lineworkers, to climb the pole and intentionally damage the fiber lines.
The vandalism left customers without internet service for several hours while LRTC crews worked into the evening to repair the damaged infrastructure and restore service. The incident resulted in thousands of dollars in repair costs, which ultimately impact the cooperative members and fiber customers Lake Region serves.
How Can You Help?
LRTC is encouraging residents and property owners near the intersection of S. Indian Road and S. 486 Road to review any available security camera or trail camera footage from around 2 p.m. on October 19. Anyone who was traveling through the area or noticed suspicious activity is encouraged to report that information to the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office or Lake Region Electric Cooperative. Even seemingly minor details could provide valuable information in identifying those responsible.
If You See Something, Say Something
